Smart
Solutions Examples
Chef America Hot Pockets
and Lunch Pockets
|
The Problem:
Too many product returns because of deformed packaging caused
by the package's lack of stacking resistance. |
 |
-
Chef America used a folding carton package for its Hot Pockets
and Lunch Pockets
frozen foods. This package was then shipped in a collective
corrugated container to the distributors.
-
When the warehouse personnel cut away the top of the corrugated
container, the folding carton packages were left unprotected
and were easily deformed by objects and other packages placed
on top.
|
The
Need Identified:
Chef
America needed an immediate solution to resolve the defects of its
packaging, and a long-term solution to avoid future damage to the
package.
The Idea:
A
three-step strategy was developed to meet Chef America's short-
and long-term objectives:
 |
1.-
An Inland special projects team added a 'Z' insert to stabilize
and reinforce the folding carton package to meet Chef America's
short term goals.
2.- The Inland team designed a temporary collective corrugated
container that allowed Chef America to finish up its existing
inventory of folding carton packages.
|
 |
 |
3.-
Finally, a new corrugated package was designed using B flute
with high-impact graphics to replace the original folding
carton. Inland's Graphic Resource Center (GRC) worked together
with Chef America to change the original folding carton
package for a preprint corrugated package.
|
The
Bottom Line:
Returns
were practically eliminated and significant cost savings in the packaging
process were achieved.
-
Not only did Inland design an attractive and practical package
for Chef America's products, but also consolidated the primary
and secondary packages into one package. The package consolidation
resulted in big savings for Chef America by eliminating various
costly production processes.
-
"Inland made an extraordinary effort to significantly reduce
Hot Pockets
and Lunch Pockets ."
